Sweet pea is the common name for Lathydorus odoratus. It is a member of the Leguminosae family, and, despite its name, doesn’t produce the pea vegetable, unlike other plants in the same family. This annual climber has a tendril that winds itself around its support and reaches one to two metres in height. It has sweetly-scented flowers that look like butterflies in white, red, pink, purple, lavender and a near blue. These plants like it cool, so you have to plan carefully based on where you live. They need about 50 days of cool temperatures from planting to blooming. The seeds will germinate in soil temperatures of 55 to 65°F, needing 10 to 14 days for this process. Either direct into the ground or in modules. You can do this in Autumn and overwinter the small plants or do it in spring if you prefer. Autumn sown plants will come into bloom a few weeks before spring sown ones but you do need to keep an eye on them over the winter. |
