Pedilantus
Description
The common name is Pedilanthus tithymaloides , (meaning foot-shaped flower) Devil's Backbone. It makes a great houseplant with its 2-foot (0.5 m) tall stems, alternate leaves, and colorful "flowers'' that are actually bracts or modified leaves. The leaves are lance shaped and thick on stout stems. The color of bracts can be white, green, red or pink. The plant is a member of the spurge family. No Devil's Backbone plant information would be complete without noting that the milky sap can be toxic to some people
Light - Grow Pedilanthus in full sun to partial shade in a very well-drained, sand-based soil. In hot summers, shade is recommended for the afternoon and also humidity. Keep soil dry in winter.
Water-Take care not to add too much water, which can lead to rotting. Water just enough to keep the potting mix moist.
Pruning-Zigzag plants require very little care in the way of pruning. Simply use clean garden shears to snip away troublesome branches, and trim the plant annually in late winter.
Propagation of Zigzag Plant
The best time to take cuttings for propagation is late summer. To do this: Clip off 1-inch stem segments on non-blooming stems.
