Costus igneus, commonly known as an insulin plant in India, belongs to the family Costaceae. Consumption of the leaves is believed to lower blood glucose levels, and diabetics consuming the leaves of this plant have reported a reduction in their blood glucose levels.
Description
You can plant an insulin plant anytime throughout the year. It is a bushy plant whose height ranges from two and a half to three feet. It is thought to be easiest to plant during the rainy season. You put manure and soil in the pot at home in the right proportion, apply it, and keep watering. It easily grows in the pot.
Environment
It grows well in shaded or semi-shaded areas, a sunny windowsill would be an ideal location for these plants.
Soil
It grows well in well-drained soil with a pH of 6.5 - 7.5, tolerates 5.5 - 8. Add coconut coir and pine bark to make the soil more draining.
