Long-lived (perennial) herbaceous plants include canna. The 1-2 m tall upright (erect) stems are strong, glabrous (hairless), and green in colour. An enormous, spreading leaf blade and a stem-clasping sheath make up the alternately placed leaves (20-60 cm long and 10-30 cm wide).

Planting and care
- If the rainfall is less than an inch per week, irrigate the plants during the summer as cannas thrive best with plenty of water.
- Maintain a thin layer of mulch around cannas to aid in moisture conservation.
- If necessary, stake a tall variety.
- Deadhead when flowers wilt to encourage new blooming.
Sunlight
At least 1-3 hours of preferably morning sunlight a day is ideal for plant to grow well and natural indirect bright light for the rest of the day.
Watering
Before water poke your finger/plain small stick into the soil to check the moisture.
Water when topsoil (1-2 inches) feels dry to touch.
Water thoroughly in the summer and reduce watering in winter and rainy season.

The soil should be well drained and fertile, rich in organic content for growing plants.

Temperature 70 and 75F (21-23C).
Fertilizer
During the main growing season (Feb-June) feed the plant with organic fertilizer.
