ABOUT GERANIUM: Geranium (Botanical Name: Pelargonium sp.) is a genus that consists of flowering plants. It is commonly called Pelargoniums, Storksbils, etc. It belongs to the family Geraniaceae. They are evergreen perennial plants in a tropical climate like that in India. Various coloured Geraniums include pink, white, and red to peach colour.
HOW TO GROW GERANIUM PLANTS: Geranium plants are a popular option among houseplants as they can grow well in low light. They are propagated by cuttings in water. Once the root develops, it can be sown back into the soil. Plants can be either grown directly outdoors in the soil or in pots.
TYPES OF GERANIUMS:
Zonal Pelargoniums – with zones or patterns in the centre of leaves.
Ivy-leafed Pelargoniums – with fleshy Ivy-shaped evergreen leaves.
Regal Pelargoniums.
Angel Pelargoniums.
Scented leaves Pelargoniums.
GERANIUM PLANT CARE-
SOIL: The plant requires well-drained moist soil. Any typical water-soluble houseplant fertilizer can be used during the growing season from March-April to August-September.
SUNLIGHT: The plant grows well under bright sunlight. Exposure to the sun’s rays for 4-5 hours a day is sufficient for its development.
WATER: Watering is to be done such that the soil remains moist and does not become soggy. Watering can be done once every 2-3 days during the summers and 1-2times a week during winter.
GERANIUM PLANT BENEFITS: Scented Geranium leaves are used in flavouring ice creams, cakes, etc. Essential scented oils are also extracted from Geranium leaves. The plant also repels a number of insects.
