All are heat tolerant and low maintenance beauties. The dianthus plant is also called Sweet William (Dianthus Flower) and has a fragrance with cinnamon or clove notes. that are commonly known as Carnations, Pinks or Sweet Williams. They bloom during the mid-summer in the Midwest and the North—and during the fall and winter in the South. You can plant dianthus flowers in spring or fall. Dianthus flowers are very low maintenance. They require only cool weather, rich and slightly alkaline soil, and full sun exposure. Six Steps to Plant Dianthus Flowers Go to your local florist or greenhouse and purchase the species of dianthus you want to grow. Decide if you want to grow your flower from seed or from a transplant. Get your soil ready. Dianthus flowers thrive on rich, fast draining, alkaline soil, with a pH balance around the 6.75 level. You may need to improve the soil by adding 2 inches of compost and one inch of manure. Use a shovel to turn the soil over, and then you can smooth it with a rake. Choose the part of your garden where your flowers will get at least four to five hours of sun exposure. If you're using dianthus transplants, go to Step 4. If you're planting with seeds, go to Step 5. Plant the flowers about 12 to 18 inches apart from each other.
