Bhrama kamal
Brahma Kamal
Perennial Saussurea obvallata grows to a height of 0.3 m. (1 ft). Insects pollinate the hermaphrodite (contains both male and female organs) flowers.
Purple flower heads are concealed from view under layers of papery, yellowish-green bracts that shelter them from the chilly mountain environment.
From July through September, the plant's flowers are visible. After that, the above-ground parts of the plant die back and become visible once more in April.
