ABOUT IRIS BULBS:
The Bearded Iris plant (Botanical Name: Iris germanica) belongs to the Iris genus from the family Iridaceae. The plant bears erect stems both simple and branching types. The Bearded Irises are one of the popular varieties of this genus.
HOW TO GROW IRIS PLANTS FROM BULBS:
The Iris plants can be easily grown in large pots or directly in the garden. Bulbs can be sown maintaining a 5-6 inch spacing in a regular potting soil mixture at a depth of 4 inches. It will start blooming 8-10 weeks post-sowing the bulbs. Prior to sowing, the bulbs can be stored in the refrigerator for 12- 14 weeks in a ventilated mesh bag.
SOIL: The plant prefers moist soil conditions, especially during the entire span of the growing period. A mixture of soil, vermicompost and cocopeat in the ratio of 2:2:1 can be used.
SUNLIGHT: The plant needs direct exposure to the sunlight; hence the pot can be placed in a south-facing direction. 3-4 hours of direct sunlight is required for growth and development. A temperature between 16-30 degrees Celcius is optimum for the plant.
WATERING: The plant requires moist soil throughout the growing season. However, over-watering may lead to the rotting of the bulbs. Watering is to be done regularly to keep the soil moist.
