Aglaonema Care Tips to Keep It Red and Shiny

1. Select the Right Variety

Well, there’s no rocket science behind this! To enjoy the vivid color, grow a variety that offers the reddest leaves! Go for Red Emperor, Red Zircon, Siam Aglaonema, Ultra Pink, Red Emerald, and Super Red Star.

2. Water Carefully

Aglaonema prefers moist soil but it should never be overly wet. Watering the plant too frequently will make it lose the sheen and color of the leaves. Let the topsoil dry out before the next watering but do not let the plant dry out completely.

Also, avoid watering the foliage.

3. Wipe the Foliage

The best way to ensure the glossy red foliage looks stunning is to wipe it clean with a moist soft cloth once in 5-7 days. This will keep the dust off the leaves, making the plant look eye-catching always with deep hues!

4. Locate Carefully

Aglaonemas are popular low light plants but to maintain the deep red hue of the leaves, it is essential that it gets a bit of morning sunlight for 2-4 hours every day. Do make sure that it is not exposed to the harsh afternoon.

5. Keep an Eye on Temperature

Do not expose the plant to a temperature below 50 F (10 C) as it can cause dark patches on the foliage, that will dent the look of red color. Remember that exposure to cold temperatures results in brown or curled edges on the foliage.

The ideal temperature for the fine growth of aglaonema is 60-80 F (15-27 C).

6. Humidity is Important

Being a tropical plant, aglaonema does well in a humid and warm atmosphere. You can mimic the conditions by keeping it in a tray filled with pebbles and water. Make sure the level of water is not above the pebbles. The plant will have a beautiful red shade between 50%-60% humidity.

7. Feed Them Right

When it comes to fertilizers, Aglaonemas are not demanding at all. You can promote the growth and red color of the foliage by feeding the plant with a 19:19:19 mix. Do refer to the label for dosage.

A dose of fish or seaweed emulsion will also be helpful in promoting a vivid color.
