The Latin word gladius, which signifies a sword, is the source of the English word gladiolus. Due to its sword-like leaves, it is also known as "Sword lily." Gladiolus are well known for their stunning flowering spikes, substantial flowers, vibrant colours, variety of sizes, and long-lasting qualities. The colour selection in Gladiolus is amazing; about any colour is accessible, including nearly black, white, pink, violet, lilac, mauve, greenish, and smoky shades.

Planting and care


  • To keep your soil moist and to prevent weeds, surround your gladioli with a 2 to 4 inch layer of mulch.

  • Water your plants frequently during the summer if you receive less than an inch of rain per week.

  • If not, water them sparingly when they are growing to keep the soil moist.

  • Eliminate the faded/dead blossoms to promote ongoing regrowth.

  • Cut off a stalk of flowers once all the blossoms have faded.

  • Make sure to keep the plant whole so that it can develop and regenerate the corms for the upcoming season.



Sunlight            -      Full sun


Watering            -       If you get less than 1 inch of rain a week, water your plants regularly throughout the summer. Otherwise, water them moderately when in growth to keep the soil moist.


Soil                        -     Gladiolus prefer well-drained and even sandy soil


Temperature              -     Minimum 10 degrees C and above


Fertilizer.                 -      Use N-P-K fertilizer at the ratio 5-10-10 or 5-10-5.


Harvest Season      -    When cutting the flower stalk, leave at least four leaves on the plant to feed the corm for next year blooms. Immerse the cut end of the flower spike in water immediately after cutting.
